Legitimate Authority

Not all authority that claims power is legitimate. This is crucial for every nation to understand, because the difference determines whether a nation stands under God's order or merely under the appearance of order.

Where Authority Is Legitimate

✦  It is established by, and accountable to, the people it governs

✦  It operates within defined and known boundaries

✦  It serves the good of those it claims to represent

✦  It remains answerable to a higher law — to principle, to conscience, to God

Where Authority Is Illegitimate

✦  It is imposed without consent

✦  It operates without accountability

✦  It serves the interests of those who wield it, not those governed

✦  It claims a power it was never given

Structures — global or otherwise — that claim authority over nations but were never chosen by the people they affect, that operate without accountability to them, and that serve their own interests above the good of the governed, hold no legitimate authority, whatever office or institution they occupy.

A nation is not obligated to surrender its sovereignty to unelected bodies. A nation is not obligated to accept the demands of structures that do not answer to its own people. A nation is not obligated to bankrupt itself, compromise its culture, abandon its standards, or open itself to forces it did not choose, merely because an outside agenda declares that it must.

This is not isolation. It is stewardship — the same stewardship required of every leader in every nation, applied now to the nation's relationship with the wider world.

Let every nation discern the difference between authority that serves and authority that merely claims the right to be served. The first reflects the order of Heaven. The second reflects only the ambition of men.

Legitimate authority answers upward — to God, and outward — to the people it serves.
